Have you been thinking about adopting a Chihuahua? Our adoption centers are always boasting a great selection of these pint-size cuties who tend to get adopted out very quickly.
Chihuahuas are courageous, lively, adventurous, and agile little dogs that enjoy affection. They can make great companions and wonderful friends. If you have your heart set on this tiny breed, make sure to consider their characteristics and needs before adopting a Chihuahua.
Here are 10 traits of Chihuahuas you should know:
1. Chihuahuas can live 15+ years...
...so don’t pass up on adopting that 4-year-old Chihuahua at the shelter because you think she is “old.” She’s still got a long, lively life ahead of her!
2. Chihuahuas are intelligent.
Because they are also strong-willed, they can be challenging to train, but they learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement. In spite of their small stature, it is very important to train your Chihuahua precisely because they are strong-willed.
3. If you treat your Chihuahua differently than you would a larger dog, you could be facilitating behavior problems.
Allowing your pup to be your “pack leader” can cause him to develop behavior issues, such as jealousy and aggression with other dogs (and sometimes humans) and can make him become suspicious of people other than his owner. Treat your new Chihuahua no differently than you would a large breed dog — become the clear leader — and you’ll get a much better and more appealing temperament out of your wonderful little pup.
4. Chihuahuas need to be socialized properly and walked regularly.
Because Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal and protective to the people they love, socialization is an extremely important part of their training. Many humans assume their little dogs get enough exercise simply from running around during the day. Walking your pup daily will provide necessary exercise and it will provide mental stimulation, making your dog happier and healthier!
5. Give ’em space!
Just because Chihuahuas are small doesn’t mean they should be kept in a small space. Make sure your Chihuahua has enough room to be comfy.
6. Chihuahuas gain weight easily.
Because they are so small, it is very easy to overfeed a Chihuahua. Talk to your veterinarian about a proper diet and portion control.
7. Like many humans, Chihuahuas enjoy warm weather and dislike the cold.
When the temperatures drop, make sure your pup stays warm. Doggie clothing shopping spree, anyone?
8. Chihuahuas make great dogs for apartment living.
Just remember that your new pup needs daily walks. Dogs that do not get to walk daily are more likely to display a wide array of behavior problems.
9. Get ready for some cute sounds!
Chihuahuas have a tendency to wheeze and snore.
10. Chihuahuas are prone to certain medical conditions.
These include rheumatism, slipped stifle, colds, and gum problems. Due to their protruding eyes, this breed also experiences corneal dryness and secondary glaucoma. Talk to your veterinarian about care for your new Chihuahua.
