AMERICAN BOBTAIL (CAT BREED)

The American Bobtail is generally medium in size, with a naturally occurring bobbed tail. These breeds possess a natural hunting gaze that combined with their body type, they are very athletic and usually well-muscled with a powerful look, and this gives them a very distinctive wild appearance.

They are devoted, playful and can provide both entertainment and emotional support. At a quick glance, you might think these cats are wild bobcats, but that also is not far from the truth. With their short, stubby tail, they may look wild, but they have docile and loving personalities.

Appearance

It is not difficult to recognize an American Bobtail, because it features are unique and somewhat different from other cats. Recognizing an American Bobtail you start by looking at their tail, it’s significantly short about 1-3 inches with a stubby appearance which distinguishes them from other cats.
American Bobtail have a wedge-shaped head, prominent cheekbones, and distinctive brow. Their large almond-shaped eyes come in all colors. Their ears are medium-sized, with wild base and rounded tips.
American Bobtails come in both longhaired and shorthaired serving the varieties of choice. The shorthaired comes in double coat- with a hard topcoat and soft, downy undercoat while the longhaired have medium-long, slightly shaggy hair that’s kind of long on the ruff, britches, belly, and tail. Their under coast is not very dense and they also have a double coat.
When you talk about their body color, they show a lot of diversity. It’s very rare to come across two American Bobtail with similar body pattern or size. Their physique is muscular and athletic, which complements their lifestyle.

History

This bobbed tails are genetic mutation that is completely harmless and can happen randomly in any cat breed. This cat breed came from feral domestic cats with natural bobtails. This breed was not recognized as a breed until the 1960s.
History noted that John and Brenda Sanders were travelling through Arizona where they found Yodi-a tabby cat with a short tail- on a Native American Reservation. This couple decided to take this kitten home to lowa. Yodi and the couple’s female cat mated, producing a litter of short-tailed kittens. These kittens were crossed with another kitten (longhaired color point cat) creating potentially the first true American Bobtail.

Character and Personality

These are lovely, loyal companions that adapt easily to an environment regardless of where you live, be it a small apartment, on a boat, in a tree house, or taking a walk, they are always there for you.
This cat breed are widely affectionate and playful, ensuring you are highly entertained not knowing when they curl up to you and eventually take a nap on your lap. Be ready to entertain them more often. With an American Bobtail there is never a dull moment.

Life Span

An American Bobtails live between 11-15 years, with proper diet, enough exercise, and lots of love. This healthy breed can have and enjoy a long and happy life if when properly taken care of.

Caring for an American Bobtail: These breed are not difficult to care for, they don’t need much exercise to feel fulfilled, and happy. Just as humans we have different ways to take care of ourselves and needs, same way it goes for our pets, there are certain things that you can do to make sure they are healthy and nicely taking care of.
• Grooming: Regular grooming is recommended to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Getting rid of stray hairs, detangles minor knots and preserves a glossy coat this can be achieved with the use of slicker brush.
The use of grooming gloves to remove loose hair while providing a relaxing massage. Trimming of nails to reduce the risk of injuries, cleaning of the ears to reduce build-up bacteria, yeast, and other harmful microorganism.
Maintaining their oral health by cleaning their teeth and preventing dental emergency. Using cat shampoos to effectively eliminate dirt, grime, and oils from it coat, while neutralizing any unpleasant odors, leaving it fur clean, fresh-smell and soft all day long.

• Flea and Ticks: The American Bobtail are prone to flea and tick infestation, relatively during the warmer months. If you notice any sign of ticks, such as small black dots on their skin or excessive scratching consult your vet for best treatment options.
• Skin Irritation: AMBotail are generally healthy breeds, but they are prone to skin irritation caused by allergies and pesky parasites.
